Argentine Tango is a unique partner dance due to it's improvisational nature and the fact that it integrates with normal foot placements the use of a "cross system" where the leader and follower both step on the same foot instead of opposite feet. The passionate sound of the music, the shape of the embrace, the emphasis on working over one's axis, and the accepted principles for making weight changes are part of what sets this dance apart from ballroom tango and from other social dances. Born out of the late 1800's immigration of Europeans and Africans to Argentina, Argentine Tango evolved from a cafe and cabaret dance into the captivating, sensual dance as we know it today. It is danced to a wide range of orchestral music and even contemporary favorites.

Queen City Ballroom's new DVIDA Syllabus Argentine Tango classes are perfect for students who are accustomed to the DVIDA teaching methodology. Foot placements are grouped into "figures", and figures are strung together into amalgamations to help you move around the ballroom. Randy brings to the classes an emphasis on musicality, core technique, and partner connection, while Karen complements Randy's knowledge with over 10 years experience in DVIDA teaching methodology.

Hustle is a a fun partner dance, with spins, rotation, and movement around the floor. It has seamless motion and minimal vertical movement or bounce. It’s unique, and can be used in almost any situation, even in tight spaces, making it the perfect social dance. It’s flashy, quick and fun! Hustle began, free form, in clubs decades ago, and has kept pace over the years with "club music". In a ballroom setting, hustle is versatile and can even be danced to tunes that we might normally classify as slow rumba, cha cha, west coast swing, and more.

International Style Cha Cha:  Is it time for you to branch out and experience another style of dancing? When used in a social dance setting, American and International Style Cha Cha are similar in many ways. They both "break on 2" and can be danced to the same music, although technically, the tempo differs slightly. Some of the figures are similar and they do share elements, though named differently, such as crossover breaks, under arm turns, outside partner breaks, etc. Why not try the International Style? It will give you additional figures, compliment your dancing, and give you a deeper understanding of technique, styling, and connecting to your partner.

Quickstep shares a common origin with the ever-popular Foxtrot. In the 1920's the foxtrot rhythm began to change as bands played various tempos of it. Eventually, the faster tempo evolved into Quickstep while the slower tempo remained the Foxtrot as we know it. Today's quickstep music has a carefree and bright feel. The dance is quick and lively, and once the basics are mastered, it can include embellishments such as hops, skips, and kicks. As an International Style Standard dance, it has an elegant look and feel.

For Beginners and Advanced Beginners in the five core dances: Rumba, East Coast Swing, Waltz, Cha Cha, Foxtrot, and in three Specialty Dances: Samba, American Style Tango and Bolero.

The three Specialty Dances, Samba, American Style Tango and Bolero, follow the Silver Smooth and Rhythm class (Tuesday nights at 6:00 pm), making them ideal for more advanced students to broaden their dance knowledge beyond the basic core dances as well as for all beginning students.

A new 10-week dance rotation starts every other week. The next start date for each of the dances is listed below.

Foxtrot:  An all purpose dance that evokes images of vaudeville and big band.   This dance can be adapted to many different types of music including smooth jazz, blues, and even some slow rock tunes.  It has an easygoing, classy, deliberate feel.

Next Foxtrot class starts on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at 6:00 pm.

Rumba: The dance of love. A sensual, romantic dance featuring Latin flair, and based on the box step. The music is full, Cuban-inspired, and classic, but easily adaptable to slow contemporary music.

Next Rumba class starts on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 7:30 pm.

Tango: American Style Tango is one of the easier smooth dances because of the absence of rise and fall. It has a staccato feel, and the music is powerful and dramatic.

Next Tango class starts on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 6:45 pm.

East Coast Swing:  A fun, upbeat, bouncy dance derived from the Lindy Hop of the early 1900's.  Today, swing is danced to many types of music including jump blues, big band, rock n' roll, and country western.

Next East Coast Swing class starts on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 at 7:30 pm.

Waltz:  A smooth, gliding dance with elegant, graceful, and romantic character.  The music is lilting and peaceful in 3/4 time.

Next Waltz class starts on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 6:45 pm.

Cha Cha:  A rhythmic, lively, and flirtatious dance using small steps and quick turns that originally evolved from mambo.  The mood of cha cha music is catchy and happy and can be found not only in classic big band tunes but also in pop, R & B, country, and rock 'n roll.

Next Cha Cha class starts on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at 6:00 pm.

Bolero: A slow, graceful, and romantic dance done to dreamy music that is similar to but slower than rumba music. It features a dance hold like that of the smooth dances, but the footwork is Latin-inspired.

Next Bolero class starts on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 6:45 pm.

Samba: A Latin dance done to the pulsing 2/4 rhythm of Brazilian Carnival-style music. The feel of the samba is fast, elegant, and playful.

Next Samba class starts on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 6:45 pm.

Zumba Fitness is an exhilarating, effective, easy to follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance "fitness-party". It is the only Latin-inspired dance fitness program that blends red-hot international music, created by Grammy Award winning producers, and contagious steps to form a "fitness-party" that is downright addictive.
